Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan’s freshly-concluded visit to India and attendance of the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament in the UAE has helped cement ties with traditional friends while expanding cooperation with new partners.

Chairman of the NA’s External Relations Committee Nguyen Van Giau made the assessment during an interview granted to the media following Ngan’s trip from December 8-13.

Giau noted that India is an important part in Vietnam’s foreign policy, as it is among four countries having a comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam. NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan had a busy schedule during her two-day stay in India, with a series of meetings with Indian State, parliamentary and Government leaders.

He underlined the signing of the first cooperation agreement between the Vietnamese NA and India’s Lower House, which marked a milestone in parliamentary ties between the two countries.

Vice President and Chairman of the Senate Mohammad Hamid Ansari told the Vietnamese NA leader that India is willing to cooperate with Vietnam not only in economic activities but also in other fields such as science-technology and labour.

At his meeting with the Vietnamese NA leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed the priority given to Vietnam in India’s Act East policy support. He also expressed support for Indian investment in oil and gas exploitation in Vietnam’s continental shelf.

At the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, Chairwoman Ngan co-chaired the discussion themed “Safeguard a Healthy Planet” and delivered a speech at the discussion.

Giau noted that this is the first time Vietnam has attended the Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, as Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is the first ever Chairwoman of the Vietnamese legislative body.

The Chairwoman held many bilateral meetings on the sideline of the summit to discuss issues of shared concerns.

The UAE side appreciated Vietnam’s attendance at the summit and contributions to the event’s success. The UAE parliament also expressed the wish to sign a cooperation agreement with Vietnam.-VNA
