Hanoi (VNA) – Taking care of people, especially the needy and vulnerable, duringthe Lunar New Year (Tet), is the responsibility of all-level Party Committeesand local authorities, an official has said.

In November2016, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs directed localitiesto use local budgets to support needy households during Tet, Deputy MinisterNguyen Trong Dam told the press in Hanoion January 5.

He revealedthat 40 provinces had submitted Tet preparation plans for needy people, notingthat natural disasters, including long-lasting floods, harmed agriculturalproduction, especially in the central and Central Highlands regions.

The officialsaid 67,000 tonnes of rice have been provided for people affected by saltwaterintrusion and marine environmental incident in the central region.

Nearly 431billion VND (19 million USD) will be used to assist people with significantcontributions to the national revolutionary cause.

The VietnamGeneral Confederation of Labour will encourage businesses to give Tet bonus toworkers and facilitate their travelling, Dam said.

The VietnamFatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee promulgated a plan to ensure a warmTet for low-income households, especially in remote, border, island and naturaldisaster prone areas.

The Committeewill present more than 6,000 gift packages worth 3.5 billion VND (154,315 USD)to support poor families and centres taking care of orphans and the disabled.

4,500 giftsworth nearly 2.3 billion VND (101,407 USD) will also be presented toimpoverished families in the northern, central, southwestern and CentralHighlands regions./.

The two gold medallists are Tran Trung Kien, a 12th grader from the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, who scored 169.25 points, and Nguyen Ngo Duc, a 12th grader from the Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in Nghe An province, who scored 151.05 points.

According to the report, which evaluates human development progress based on the Human Development Index (HDI), tracking achievements in health, education and income, Vietnam’s HDI in 2023 reached 0.766, ranking 93rd out of 193 countries and territories. This marked a substantial leap from 0.499 in 1990, representing a 53.5% increase, a notable trajectory of growth over more than three decades.
