New initiative turns ethnic Thai script into Unicode font

Phan Anh Dung, Head ofthe Thua Thien-Hue Information Technology Centre’s Department forResearch Applications, designed the new software system.

The software is compliant with other international Unicode fonts andhelps overcome problems triggered by the previous Thai letter fonts.

Dung has also set up a website to preserve the cultural characteristicsand the script of Thai ethnic people. The website provides informationrelated to the history and the development of the Thai language,research on Thai culture and script, and a Thai-Vietnamese dictionary.

Dung’s initiative is said to be comprehensive, methodical and valuablefor the education, research and preservation of the ethnic Thaicommunity in Vietnam .

Thai ethnic minority people are the country’s third largest ethnicgroup after Kinh and Tay people and are one of the ethnic groups tohave had their own language from around the 11th century. The Thailanguage comes from the Brahmic family of scripts and it is influencedby Khmer letters and similar to Thailand ’s and Laos ’ letters.

The Thai language is one of ten languages to be taught at school in abid to preserve and develop it, as well as highlight its culturalcharacteristics./.

HCM City tackles fishing violations at roots

As of December 9, all of the 4,475 fishing vessels in HCM City had registered and updated in the VNFishbase database, of them 4,268 licensed. The remainder, classified as ineligible, are strictly monitored and kept moored locally, with no permission to put to sea.

Vietnam, IAEA comprehensively assess national nuclear power infrastructure
