Four to five hot spells are expected to hit the northern region this summer, with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius.

The first hot spell is forecast to come at the end of May or early June, according to the Hydro-meteorological Centre in the northern region.

The heat waves will mainly occur in May, June and July, said Pham Dinh Loc, the centre’s director.

Loc predicted that total rainfall during this year’s rainy season (May to October) will be equivalent to that of previous years, reaching between 1,300-1,500mm after seven to nine heavy rains.-VNA
