According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake happened at 06:41 local time and its epicentre was 250 kilometres west of the province’s capital Jayapura at a depth of 52 kilometres.
Local authorities said a 15-year-old boy fell into the river when the quake hit and remains missing.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Agency, said the quake damaged at least two buildings, a hospital and a storehouse in Kasonaweja city, not far from the epicentre.
