Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry of National Defence has reported that a soldier died from septic shock caused by a severe meningococcal infection while seven other soldiers, who had been in direct contact with the deceased, have been isolated due to this infectious disease.

Nguyen Van Nghiep, a weapons personnel of Battalion 4, Regiment 12, Division 3, Military Region 1, passed away on January 10.

Following the incident, on February 13, the Institute of Military Preventive Medicine carried out PCR tests on officers and soldiers of Regiment 12, Division 3. The results revealed that seven soldiers tested positive for meningococcal bacteria, all of whom had been in direct contact with Nghiep.

The soldiers who tested positive have been isolated, and the unit has coordinated closely with Division 3 and relevant authorities to implement strict measures to control the spread of the infection.

Earlier, at around 8am on February 9, Nghiep reported to his commander that he experienced symptoms of fever, nausea, and abdominal pain. He was examined by the unit's medical team, who administered intravenous fluids, fever reducers, antibiotics, and monitored his condition. However, his health deteriorated, and he was transferred to Military Hospital 110 and then to Central Military Hospital 108 for further treatment. Despite doctors' intensive efforts, Nghiep passed away.

Tests conducted at the Central Military Hospital 108 confirmed that his death was caused by septic shock from a severe meningococcal infection. Following his death, law enforcement agencies launched an investigation, including a forensic examination in the presence of Nghiep’s family, to define the exact cause of death. Other legal procedures were also carried out.

The High Command of Military Region 1 has sent a delegation to meet with Nghiep’s family and local authorities, inform them of the case, offer condolences, and assist with funeral arrangements, ensuring all procedures were in line with regulations./.
