Yen Bai (VNA) – Up to 105kg of ancient coins with the oldest dating back to 118 BC were recently confiscated in Luc Yen district, the northern province of Yen Bai.

Deputy Director of the Yen Bai Museum Ly Kim Khoa said the museum received the coins from police of Luc Yen district on July 25.

Verification results show that the bronze coins belong to different periods. Some of them date back to 118 BC under the reign of Emperor Wudi of China’s Han Dynasty. Others were made between 621 and 1233.

On late April 23, police confiscated the coins from two motorcyclists who showed suspicious acts while moving from Vinh Lac commune to Lieu Do commune of Luc Yen. The items were divided into two bags weighing 105kg in total.

According to police investigation, the coins had been unearthed by some local residents in Khau Ca hamlet of the district’s An Phu commune and then sold to one of the two motorcyclists. -VNA
