Vietnamese expatriates in southern Australia have organised many activities in response to ongoing tensions in the East Sea, with their efforts receiving a warm response from international friends.

A festival was recently held in the host country with the aim of connecting the community to preserve the nation’s traditional culture.

The event, the first of its kind there, featured a rural market showcasing various products such as fine arts, handicrafts and souvenirs, as well as a fashion show celebrating traditional Vietnamese costumes and a banquet with local specialties.

On May 24, hundreds of the Vietnamese people in the area marched through the streets in protest against China ’s illegal placement of its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 into Vietnam ’s exclusive economic zone, which has violated Vietnam ’s sovereign rights and jurisdiction over its zone and legal continental shelf.

They carried banners affirming Vietnam ’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagos and demanding China’s immediate withdrawal of its oil rig out of Vietnam ’s waters and respect of international law.

They also delivered leaflets highlighting the wrongful acts of China as well as the legitimate requirement and desire for peace of the Vietnamese.-VNA
