Partnership agreement to cement relationship with Laos

This was one of theoutcomes of the 35 th meeting of the Vietnam-Laos Inter-governmentalCommittee for Economics, Culture, and Science and Technology Cooperationheld in the northern province of Vinh Phuc.

During themeeting, both sides discussed a number of fields, including educationand training, culture, science and technology, mining, energy andinvestment.

Under the terms of the economic partnership, bothsides agreed to review the activities of Vietnamese investors in Laosand to create favourable conditions to implement investment projectsand take punitive measures against enterprises which failed to deliveron promises.

The two sides requested enterprises involved inthe hydro-power plant, Sekaman 3 to speed up progress so that commercialoperations could be started soon.

They also targeted an increase of 25 percent in two-way trade turnover next year.

Both sides agreed to continue preferential taxation treatment for goods made in each country.

To further strengthen Vietnam-Belgium relations, especially parliamentary cooperation, both sides agreed to enhance delegation exchanges at all levels, particularly between parliamentary committees and friendship groups. They also pledged to share legislative and supervisory experience, coordinate positions in international organisations, support each other’s candidacies for UN bodies, and effectively implement the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

President Cuong warmly welcomed King Philippe and a high-ranking delegation of the Kingdom of Belgium on their first state visit to Vietnam since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1973, affirming that the trip is an important historical milestone, opening up a new page for the friendly relations between the two countries.
