US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) will continue to fund Vietnam in its efforts to prevent and combat the deadly disease HIV/AIDS.

PEPFAR’s Public Relations staff Hoang Thanh Hai made the remark at a requiem for 100 persons who have died of HIV/AIDS, held at Cau Ca pagoda in Hanoi on September 1.

PEPFAR has since 2008 helped Cau Ca Pagoda set up and operate the “Smile of the Sun” Centre, a home for 50 HIV/AIDS infected children who are learning English and receiving legal consultations as well as learning measures to prevent and fight the disease.

The PEPFAR has as of now granted around 35 million USD to the “For a Bright Tomorrow” group, which was set up in 2003 to assist HIV/AIDS patients, fight discrimination against them and raise public awareness on the deadly disease, the group’s coordinator Van Tung said, adding that his group now boasts around 4,000 members working in 16 cities and provinces nationwide.

Since 2004, PEPFAR has provided 320 million USD to help Vietnam provide comprehensive services on taking precautionary measures against the disease and care and treatment of HIV carriers.

In 2009 alone, it funded around 90 million USD as compared to 88.7 million USD in 2008, making up 80 percent of the total funding pledged by international donors for the country’s programme to prevent and control HIV/AIDS.

According to statistics by the Vietnam HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Department, Vietnam had, by the end of August, 132,000 people carrying the HIV virus. Most of them are between 20 and 39 years old, and are not aware of the danger of the deadly disease.

The percentage of HIV/AIDS infected men is four times higher than that of women in Vietnam. Cities and provinces having the country’s highest percentage of infection are Hanoi, Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh city, Dien Bien, Son La, Thai Nguyen, Yen Bai, Quang Ninh and Ba Ria Vung Tau./.
