Hanoi (VNA) – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte called for greater international cooperation in the fight against Islamic militants following military victories in Iraq, Syria and the southern Philippine city of Marawi.
Duterte will discuss the fight against terrorism, a key priority, with ASEAN leaders and regional partners, including US President Donald Trump, at the ASEAN Summit in Manila on November 13, Philippine Foreign Minister Alan Peter Cayetano said in a statement a day after an Islamic State-inspired attack in New York killed eight people.
The Philippine president will urge its allies to step up efforts in going after IS and its affiliates worldwide, Cayetano noted.
He added that the Philippines wants to deepen its cooperation with the allies by further enhancing intelligence sharing, training and capacity building, among others.
The Philippine armed forces have liberated Marawi city after the five-month clashes against Islamic militants, which claimed 1,100 lives and made about 400,000 others leave their homes.-VNA
