Hanoi (VNA) - Phu Quoc International Airport recorded 50 international flights on February 14, marking the highest daily figure since the airport commenced operations in 2012, welcoming more than 30,600 passengers and signaling a vibrant Lunar New Year peak season for the island.
The airport handled a total of 86 arriving flights that day, including 50 international and 36 domestic services. This marked the highest number of international arrivals in a single day since the airport officially began operations in 2012.
Total passenger throughput reached 30,651 travellers. International passengers accounted for 18,271 (9,582 arrivals and 8,689 departures), representing nearly 60% of the day’s total volume. Domestic passengers totaled 12,380 (5,618 arrivals and 6,762 departures), reflecting strong demand across both segments.
The milestone of 50 international flights in one day underscores Phu Quoc’s robust growth within the regional aviation network. The record comes as the island enters the peak travel period ahead of the 2026 Lunar New Year.
According to the operational plan for Lunar New Year 2026, total flight movements and passenger numbers at the Phu Quoc International Airport are projected to increase significantly compared to the previous year. Overall flights during the holiday period are expected to rise by approximately 50% compared to Lunar New Year 2025, averaging around 75 flights per day, with peak days reaching 80–84 flights. Passenger volume is forecast to exceed 720,000 travellers, with both domestic and international segments showing strong growth.
This surge represents a positive signal for local tourism and economic activity, while also placing high demands on operational management and service quality at the airport.
To effectively manage the Lunar New Year peak, the airport has implemented proactive, coordinated, and flexible operational measures. These include additional personnel deployment, equipment and ground service resources, as well as a comprehensive review of infrastructure and operational processes to optimise performance under increased traffic.
Close coordination has also been strengthened with relevant authorities and airlines to streamline procedures in high-traffic areas such as check-in counters, security screening checkpoints, and baggage claim belts. Staffing has been reinforced during peak hours, ensuring smooth passenger flow, safety, and service continuity.
In parallel, the Phu Quoc International Airport has introduced service enhancements and capacity upgrades, including expanded Wi-Fi coverage, improved mobile signal systems, additional flight information display screens, expanded check-in counters, enhanced baggage handling connectivity, and the implementation of automated electronic toll collection at airport access points from January 1, 2026, aimed at reducing congestion and improving traffic efficiency.
Since early 2026, Sun Group has officially taken over operations and commenced investment in upgrading and expanding the airport, with the objective of increasing capacity to 20 million passengers per year ahead of APEC 2027.
