Phu Quoc – the island that hasn’t turned off its fireworks for two straight years

More than 750 consecutive nights of fireworks, with over 380,000 fireworks launched, stand as a vivid metaphor for an island persistently striving toward a brighter future.

Hanoi (VNA) – Since January 2024, when the multimedia show Kiss of the Sea officially premiered, the night sky over Phu Quoc has lit up with fireworks every single evening, becoming a defining signature of the island.

More than 750 consecutive nights of fireworks, with over 380,000 fireworks launched, stand as a vivid metaphor for an island persistently striving toward a brighter future.

Lighting up Phu Quoc, the Pearl Island

Over the past two years, more than 380,000 fireworks have been launched as part of the Kiss of the Sea show, an investment by Sun Group. An estimated over 880,000 spectators have watched the show directly from the grandstands, while millions of visitors and local residents in Sunset Town have witnessed Phu Quoc’s nightly fireworks displays. This is not merely a record in terms of frequency, but a strong statement of ambition from a destination determined to move forward.

Two uninterrupted years of fireworks have also coincided with two years of Phu Quoc witnessing the strong return of international visitors, the revival of air routes, and the emergence of night streets, night markets, restaurants, and hotels. Visitor numbers have continued to rise, with several periods setting new records, showing that Phu Quoc’s appeal has not only returned, but is entering a longer-term growth cycle.

In 2025 alone, Phu Quoc welcomed 8.3 million visitors, exceeding the annual plan by 18.1% and increasing 38.5% year-on-year. International arrivals reached 1.9 million, surpassing the target by 86% and rising 93.6% compared to the previous year. Phu Quoc has frequently appeared on global travel rankings and been recognised by leading international publications.

In the first month of 2026, Phu Quoc International Airport recorded scenes rarely seen before, repeatedly setting new records for international flights, with growth of 40% compared to the same period last year. As global travel news outlet Travel and Tour World noted: “Phu Quoc is setting a new benchmark for Asian tourism.”

Two years of persistence on Pearl Island

Few places in the world maintain artistic fireworks as a “daily rhythm” of tourism. Even fewer choose to do so after the tourism industry has just gone through its most difficult period in history – the COVID-19 pandemic.

Phu Quoc and Sun Group chose a path that few dared to take: investing heavily, operating consistently, and persevering, even during the early nights when the show attracted only a few hundred spectators. All of this was done to keep the momentum alive – for the island, for visitors, and for belief in the future.

With the addition of the Symphony of the Sea show, Phu Quoc has become the only island in the world to present two fireworks displays every night.

Fireworks are just one piece in Sun Group’s broader strategy to develop an integrated ecosystem encompassing tourism, entertainment, hospitality, as well as urban and transport infrastructure to international standards. Tens of trillions of Vietnamese dong have been invested in southern Phu Quoc, creating a mega entertainment complex rarely seen in Vietnam. The area is home to iconic landmarks, international-standard shows with two nightly fireworks displays, the presence of four of the world’s leading hotel management brands, and vibrant commercial and culinary streets.

Alongside this synchronised infrastructure investment, southern Phu Quoc is set to become the heart of APEC 2027, hosting more than 20,000 senior leaders, business communities from 21 major economies, and thousands of international journalists.

To prepare for this historic event, the area is developing a convention and exhibition centre expected to set new world records, a multi-purpose performance venue capable of hosting international shows, a system of high-end hotels managed by leading global brands, and a transport axis conveniently connecting to Phu Quoc International Airport.

The fireworks lighting up the sky each night, therefore, are not merely for spectacle. They symbolise an island on the rise – a destination willing to invest in experiences, committed to international standards, and determined to stay the course.

In the post-pandemic period, Phu Quoc has not only recovered, but is now reaping the rewards of a long-term development strategy, positioning itself as a national and international hub for tourism and service-driven economic growth./.
