HCM City (VNA) – A pilot project for the promotion of the rights of disabled children in Ho Chi Minh City was launched on February 25.

The project, jointly implemented by the Ho Chi Minh City Child Welfare Association (HCWA) and the Danish Vietnamese Association (DVA), was piloted in district 8 and Binh Thanh district for 12 months, with a total investment of over 2.6 billion VND (101,900 USD).

The focus of the project is to provide scholarships, urgent healthcare support, health insurance cards, and accident insurance for children with disabilities. It also includes legal assistance and the provision of specialised equipment for these children. Additionally, the project offers recreational activities, play areas, forums for children with disabilities, as well as training and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills in caring for them, and knowledge on children's rights.

According to HCWA Chairwoman Luong Thi Thuan, many children with disabilities currently face difficulties in daily life and often suffer from stigma.

The project not only aims to improve their lives but also seeks to eliminate prejudices, creating a more inclusive and equal environment.

Its goal is to promote the rights of children with disabilities in the city through intervention measures to identify related challenges and evaluate the outcomes, before considering the feasibility and appropriateness of a larger intervention.

Representatives of the Denmark-Vietnam Friendship Association and the DVA said that although the project lasts for only 12 months, its long-term impact will serve as a pilot for child protection network members, local authorities, and other stakeholders.

Specifically, through the project, stakeholders will gain a deeper understanding of the conditions faced by children with disabilities, enabling them to implement better interventions and measures to prevent stigma and discrimination, thus contributing to the effective enforcement of relevant laws at the local level and empower disabled children to become key agents of change./.
