An Giang (VNA) – The Islamic community in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang has been actively contributing to local efforts to eradicate substandard houses, helping improve living conditions for disadvantaged families.
One such beneficiary is A Mah, a resident of Khanh Khoa ccommune in Chau Phu district, who moved into his new home just before the traditional Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.
The 56-square-meter house was constructed with a concrete floor and corrugated metal roof at a cost of over 90 million VND (3,500 USD), funded through the province’s Great Solidarity House programme. For A Mah and his family, it marks the end of nearly 40 years of unstable housing.
“I’m overjoyed and deeply grateful for the support from the Government and the Islamic community in An Giang province,” A Mah said, adding that “With this new home, my family can finally settle down and work toward a better future.”
In early 2025, two other families in Cham village of Khanh Hoa commune also received great solidarity houses. The homes were made possible by donations mobilised by local authorities and the representative board of the Islamic community in An Giang province.
Sity Hara, a representative of the Islamic community in An Giang province, emphasised the community’s commitment to social welfare initiatives.
For 2025, the Islamic Community Representative Board has pledged 4 billion VND (156,800 USD) to support An Giang province’s social welfare programmes, including scholarships for disadvantaged students, aid packages for struggling households, and efforts to eliminate substandard housing.
According to the An Giang Department of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs, the province currently has 4,656 households in need of housing support. This includes 585 families of revolution contributors, 667 poor and near-poor households, and 3,404 low-income families.
The province plans to build 4,055 new homes and repair 601 existing ones, with a total estimated budget of over 301 billion VND (11.8 million USD).
To meet housing targets, An Giang authorities have called on district and municipal governments to accelerate efforts, aiming to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses by September 2025.
Long Xuyen and Chau Doc cities are expected to complete their housing programmes by the end of March 2025, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the country’s reunification and the district-level Party congresses.
Other localities aim to finish their housing initiatives by August 30, ahead of Vietnam’s National Day on September 2./.
