This urgent and long-term task needs to be carriedout synchronously at all levels and by all social communities, PrimeMinister Nguyen Tan Dung stated at the sixth meeting of the NationalCommittee on Climate Change in Hanoi on March 3.

The meeting was held to accelerate the implementation of the PartyCentral Committee’s Resolution 24-NQ/TW on responding to climate changeand strengthening natural resources management and environmentalprotection.

The PM stressed the need to raisepublic awareness of climate change responses. He requested members ofthe Government and the committee review and update planning in eachsector and in each region, especially those most vulnerable to climatechange such as the Mekong Delta and coastal regions.

He also asked research institutes to rapidly complete climate change scenarios using advanced scientific studies.

Priority should be given to projects and programmes preventingerosion by planting protective forests, upgrading the sea dyke system,and addressing flooding in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Tre province andCa Mau province.

It is necessary to mobilisecapital from both society and international organisations to respond toclimate change, the leader added.

A reportdelivered at the meeting showed Vietnam’s climate change policies haveimproved in recent years. International cooperation in this field hasbeen enhanced and disaster forecasts have improved. However, budgetedfunds for initiatives remain limited.-VNA

Three new plant species discovered in Nui Chua National Park

The newly discovered species are shrub-like smaller trees with floriferous branchlets called Sam cuong dai (Memecylon longipedunculatum), Diep ha chau Nui Chua (Nymphanthus adenophorus) and Long muc Nui Chua (Wrightia nuichuaensis). Their discovery was officially published in Phytotaxa, a leading international journal on plant taxonomy and biodiversity, on January 19, 2025.
