The Vietnamese Government is working hard to increase the quality of tertiary education so that graduates can satisfy both domestic and foreign labour markets.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made the statement while receiving Professor Ngo Bao Chau, Fields Medal winner, and a dialogue group on education in Hanoi on July 29.

PM Dung also stated that the government is actively implementing a project on the fundamental and comprehensive reform of education and training at all levels and majors.

He asked Chau, who is Scientific Director of the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics, and the dialogue group to continue giving consultations in order to perfect educational policies.

Chau proposed the Government continue support for his institute’s operation, saying that over the past three years, the institute has strived to improve the quality of Vietnamese mathematicians’ scientific research by inviting professors from aboard to give lectures.

The dialogue group also suggested that the Government put forth policies to encourage Vietnamese scientists overseas to contribute their opinions to the country’s education and training issues.

The same day, the Government leader also had a working session with the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, during which he asked the union to help promote the role of intellectuals in the country’s industrialisation and modernisation.-VNA
