Vietnam, France forge defence ties

Defence cooperation between Vietnam and France has been consolidated over the years with significant achievements in many areas, according to senior Vietnamese and French officers.

Hanoi (VNA) – Defence cooperation between Vietnam and France has been consolidated overthe years with significant achievements in many areas, according to seniorVietnamese and French officers.

Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Phuong Nam,Deputy Chief of the General Staff ofthe Vietnam People's Army (VPA) and RearAdmiral Denis Bertrand,Joint Commander Armed Forces in French Polynesiaand Commander of the French Polynesian and Pacific MaritimeZones, agreed that bilateral defence ties have been enhanced in training,military medicine, peacekeeping missions and defence industry.

During ameeting in Hanoion March 20, the officers stressed that the two countries boast substantialpotential for defence collaboration, expressing their hope for more pragmaticdefence affiliation in the future.

Lauding theoutcomes of working sessions between Rear Admiral Denis Bertrand  and representatives of VPA’s agencies andunits, Namsaid the VPA’s General Staff will create the best possible conditions forexchanges and meetings between the two sides.

Rear Admiral Denis Bertrand pledged to contribute moreto enhancing defence ties between Vietnamand France,especially via navies.

On March 19, the Rear Admiral visited the VietnamPeople’s Navy in the northern port city of Hai Phong where he was received byRear Admiral Hoang Hong Ha, Deputy Commander ofthe Navy.

Ha noted his hope that the Vietnamese and French navalforces will intensify delegation exchange and further cooperation in training,rescue operations at sea and natural catastrophic aid, as well as issues ofshared concern in Asia and globally.

Rear Admiral Denis Bertrand said his visit aims tomaterialise the defence cooperation plan between Vietnam and France in 2018adopted at the second Vietnam-France Defence Policy Dialogue atthe deputy defence ministerial level, while seeking ways to boost friendship andcooperation between the two defence ministries.-VNA
