State President Nguyen Minh Triet has presented silks and New Year greetings cards to 59 centenarians in the central province of Ninh Thuan on the occasion of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.
The gifts to these senior citizens, most of whom are still in good health condition, constitute the Party and State’s care for the lives of the elderly in line with the nation’s time-honoured tradition of respecting the old.
At present, Vietnam has some 7,200 people over 100 years old – double the figure for 1999.
According to the Health Ministry, 73 percent of old people are living in rural areas.
The United Nations has estimated that Vietnam would have 29.77 million old people by 2050./.
