Nghe An (VNA) – A red-faced monkey (Macaca arctoides), a rare and endangered species, was handed over to authorities by a local resident in Hung Chan commune, Nghe An province, on November 25.
The adult monkey, weighing about 6kg, was transferred to the Wildlife Rescue Centre at Pu Mat National Park, where experts will monitor its health and provide care before reintroduction into its natural habitat.
Red-faced monkeys are the largest in the Macaca genus and are classified as endangered in Vietnam (Group IIB), listed in the Vietnamese Red Book and the IUCN Red List. They play a key role in maintaining biodiversity in Vietnam’s forests.
Recent natural disasters and floods have caused wild animals such as monkeys, birds, and aquatic species to enter residential areas. The voluntary surrender of wildlife reflects growing community awareness and responsibility, as well as local authorities’ efforts to conserve biodiversity.
Earlier, on November 13, residents in Anh Son commune handed over two rare monkeys, a red-faced monkey and a stump-tailed macaque, to local authorities. These animals were also sent to Pu Mat National Park for care before being returned to the wild./.
