Red River Delta, north central region leads in new rural area building

Deputy Prime MinisterVuong Dinh Hue asked the Red River Delta and north central region to upholdtheir leading role in building new-style rural areas, during a conference heldin Nghe An province on August 17.

The Deputy PMsaid many effective models and initiatives in building new-style rural areasnationwide were born in the region, citing such examples as the One Commune,One Product (OCOP) programme of Quang Ninh; the model rural residential areasand gardens of Ha Tinh, the building of new rural areas at disadvantagedhamlets and villages of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa, and the environmental protectioncampaign of Nam Dinh.

The region is researching new aspects in buildingnew rural areas for the post-2020 period, including rural tourism, waste classificationand sewage treatment in residential areas, building codes for agriculturalproduction areas and development of agricultural production in response toclimate change, he said.

The Deputy PM asked localities in the region to continuemaking the building of new rural areas a regular and long-term task, and avoidcomplacency, especially communes and districts which were already recognised asnew rural areas.

He stressed that the region should strive fornew breakthroughs in rural economic development so as to avoid the middleincome trap.

According to Minister of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment Nguyen Xuan Cuong, nearly 70 percent of communes in the Red RiverDelta and north central region have been recognised as new rural areas so far,much higher than the national ratio of 50.26 percent.

Binh Thuan ramps up measures to combat IUU fishing

According to the Binh Thuan Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province has completed registration for all “three-no” fishing boats - vessels without registration, licences or monitoring systems - measuring six metres or more. About 2,710 such vessels have been registered, meeting 100% of the ministry’s requirements and 2,012 operational vessels have been fitted with VMS devices.

Vietnam, US hold 169th repatriation ceremony for American MIA servicemen

At the ceremony, Vietnam handed over four boxes containing remains recovered during recent joint excavations in Hue city, and Quang Tri and Kon Tum provinces. Preliminary forensic analysis on April 15 suggested the remains may belong to US MIAs and they will be sent to Hawaii for further identification.
