Hue city to launch inland water tourism route in Imperial Citadel

The Ngu Ha River, an artificial waterway dating back to the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945), runs through the heart of the Imperial City and historically served as a transport route, defensive line, and key landscape axis. In recent years, it has mainly functioned for drainage and environmental regulation. The reopening of the waterway is expected not only to restore its transport role but also to unlock its cultural and scenic value as a heritage river.

Tourist arrivals in Hue surge, further growth expected

During the period, the city has welcomed more than 1.9 million visitors, up 31.3% year-on-year. Of the total, international arrivals exceeded 843,000, rising 26.7%, while domestic visitors reached over 1.05 million, up 35.2% compared with the same period last year.

Visit Vietnam Year – Hue 2025 has left a series of strong imprints, reflecting a marked transformation in Hue’s tourism in terms of scale, quality and brand positioning. Hue accelerates shift toward green, low-plastic tourism models

Over the past three years, Hue tourism authorities have strengthened communication and advocacy for plastic waste reduction through 10 training sessions with 690 participants, “Coffee Talk” events, professional Zalo groups, and direct engagement with businesses. As a result, 102 enterprises and business households have signed commitments to reduce plastics, and 12 hotels have pioneered plastic-reduction practices.

Funded by the WWF in Norway through WWF-Vietnam, the training centre for sustainable tourism practices provides knowledge on alternatives to plastic, environmentally friendly tourism management and training methods, and tours designed to minimise plastic use for both students and local communities, and serves as a hub linking businesses, educational institutions and stakeholders to build a green tourism ecosystem in Hue.

With the theme “Hue - Ancient Capital, New Opportunity,” Visit Vietnam Year 2025 aims to strengthen tourism linkages between Hue and other cities and provinces nationwide, while enhancing the image, position, and brand of Vietnamese tourism in general and that of the central city in particular. The programme will feature four main seasonal activity groups representing spring, summer, autumn, and winter, encompassing over 170 national and provincial-level events.
