The three nations reached the agreement during a recent trilateral meeting in Beijing between the RoK’s Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Yong-joon and his Japanese counterpart, Sasae Kenichiro, and the Assistant to the Chinese Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue.
The agreement will secure final approval at a summit meeting of leaders of the three countries scheduled to take place in late June.
The planned establishment of the secretariat is expected to lay a foundation for building an East Asian Community.
An RoK diplomat said the secretariat will create a mechanism for the nations to effectively exchange information. It will also help the RoK enhance its role in building a regional community with East Asia ’s two major economic powers./.
