Satellite positioning devices installed in 32 high-capacity fishing vessels of southern Soc Trang province’s fishermen have proved efficient after over one month of operation.

The device installation is part of a project to monitor fishing boats, fishing grounds and marine resources using satellite technology, known in short as Movimar.

The satellite technology allows fishermen to receive up-to-date sea weather forecast sent by inshore monitoring stations and send back signals that help authorised agencies to position their boats in case of emergency.

In addition, the device will provide timely and accurate forecast on fishing fields, helping fishermen with more effective catching and reduced risks.

Run by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in partnership with the French company, Collecte Localisation Satellites SA, the Movimar project aims to perfect the sea fishing management information system for the industrialisation and modernisation of the aquatic sector, effectively and safely monitoring fish catch while contributing to ensuring the order, national security and sovereignty at sea.

Under the project, 3,000 boats of more than 90 CV fishing offshore in 28 coastal provinces and cities will be selected to be equipped with the satellite devices.

Earlier in April, a training on how to use the device took place in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, with over 60 fishing vehicle owners and captains taking part.
