Singapore (VNA) - Singaporean President Halimah Yacob met with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the 51st ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM 51) and related meetings in Singapore on August 3, promising to deepen bilateral cooperation.
Halimah Yacob stressed that Singapore and China have enjoyed the friendship and bilateral cooperation in various fields, with fruitful results.
She hoped that the two countries would explore new ways to expand the mutually beneficial cooperation and speed up talks on bilateral free trade agreement.
Wang Yi, for his part, said this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, adding that Singapore has made contributions to this process in different stages.
In a meeting with his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan, Wang spoke highly of the role of Singapore as coordinator for China-ASEAN relations over the past three years.
He affirmed that China always supports the central role of ASEAN in collaboration between East Asia and ASEAN.
In reply, Vivian agreed that the two countries should be persistent in the struggle against emerging trade unilateralism and protectionism, while maintaining multilateralism as well as free trade and economic integration in the region.
He valued China’s support for the role of Singapore as coordinator for ASEAN-China relations.-VNA
