Singapore issues statement on meeting of Singaporean, DPRK leaders

Singapore’s Foreign Ministry on June 10 issued a press statement following the meeting between Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un.

Hanoi (VNA) – Singapore’s Foreign Ministry on June 10  issued a press statement following the meeting between Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un.

The statement said at the first meeting between the two leaders, PM Lee welcomed Kim to Singapore.  They discussed Singapore-DPRK relations, developments in the DPRK and regional developments, including the recent positive developments on the Korean Peninsula. 

PM Lee complimented the decision by Kim and US President Donald Trump to hold the US-DPRK Summit. He wished Kim success at the US-DPRK Summit and expressed his hope that the US-DPRK meeting will advance the prospects for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the larger region.

Earlier, the Yonhap News Agency of the Republic of Korea (RoK) cited Kim as saying that if his meeting with Trump is successfully held, Singapore's efforts will be historically recognised.

Kim also expressed thanks to Lee over Singapore's "provision of convenience" to the DPRK’s delegation.

The US-DPRK Summit is scheduled to take place at 9am on June 12 (local time) at Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island.-VNA
