High tide in the southern economic hub has peaked at the record 1.75m in recent days, heavily flooding several areas in the city.

From the centre of District 1, hi-end new urban areas in District 2 to the outskirts areas, high tide has seriously affected people’s daily activities.

Other nearby localities, including Can Tho city and Vinh Long, Soc Trang and An Giang provinces, have also suffered from the same situation.

Can Tho city’s downtown looks like rivers during floods. High tide reached its peak of 2.25m, disordering people’s daily and production activities.

According to experts, water levels in Hau and Tien rivers’ upstream reaching the peak together with high tide are the main reasons of floods in southern localities.

The situation is also attributable to narrowed canal areas as well as asynchronous flood prevention measures and construction plans.

Water levels will remain above the alarm level in several days. Southerners are advised to prepare well for the upcoming high tides during the rainy season./.
