Supreme courts of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia bolster cooperation

The supreme courts of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia have agreed to strengthen bonds in the combat against criminals and the settlement of trans-border civil cases.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The supreme courts of Vietnam, Laos andCambodia have agreed to strengthen bonds in the combat against criminals and thesettlement of trans-border civil cases.

In a joint statement issued at their fifth conference of border provinces’courts which took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodian on December 14-15, they wereunanimous that in the context of more complicated and unpredictable globaldevelopments such as terrorism and territorial disputes, cooperation among thethree supreme courts and courts in the border localities has had an increasingrole in maintaining regional security and stability.

Since the ASEAN Economic Community was set up, trade and investment among thethree countries have been thriving. However, it has triggered severalformidable challenges, including rising level of complexity and severity incriminal cases, and international trade conflicts.

Thus, it needs strong bonds among the three judicial bodies and the establishmentof a coordinating board to address criminal cases, cross-border disputes incivil affairs and trade will have positive impact on the global integrationprocess in each country.

The three supreme courts reached consensus on strategies and multilateralcooperation mechanisms. Accordingly, they will enhance experience exchange intrial of civil and criminal cases, as well as collaboration in the fightagainst trafficking of drugs, human and wildlife animals.

They reiterated that the collaboration will help promote traditionalfriendship, which is deemed as a key to stability and development of eachnation.

Before attending the conference, Chief Justiceof the Supreme People’s Court of Vietnam Nguyen Hoa Binh had a meeting with ChiefJustice of the Supreme Court of Cambodia Dith Munty.

The first and fourth conferences were held inVietnam, while the second and the fifth were held in Cambodia, and the third inLaos. 

The sixth edition of its kind is due to take placein Laos.-VNA

Vietnam, Laos step up coordination in border management, protection

Under the agreement, the sides committed to focusing on key areas, including regular and ad hoc exchanges of information on hostile forces’ activities and transnational crimes, particularly drug trafficking and weapons smuggling; and coordinated efforts to prevent illegal encroachment, unlawful settlement, spontaneous cross-border migration, and illegal exploitation of forest and mineral resources.
