Hanoi (VNA) - TheMinistry of Natural Resources and Environment has set up aninter-disciplinary inspection team to supervise charcoal exploitation atmining areas nationwide in the last six months of this year.

The move was made after the online newspaperVietnamPlus reported on the theft of charcoal at key coal mines, includingthose managed by the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group and theNortheast Corporation.

Lai Hong Thanh, Deputy Director of the GeneralDepartment of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam, said after learning of thethefts in Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh and Son La provinces, thedepartment reported to the ministry.

It also asked the People’s Committees of theseprovinces, the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group and theNortheast Corporation to examine the management of the mining areas.

The department has received a report on theincident and decided to set up an inter-disciplinary inspection team tocheck the situation carefully and transparently.

Last month, VietnamPlus reported on the loss ofcharcoal discharged from the mining areas in the three provinces.

Local people were reportedly hired to steal thecharcoal, which was not mentioned in output reports.

On average, a dozen tonnes of charcoal werepicked up every day and sold for 1.6-1.8 million VND (68.8-77.4 USD) per tonne.

This caused a big loss for the State budget anda shortage of materials for the power sector.

According to a 2018 Vinacomin report, at leastfour millions of tonnes of commercial coal were stolen from the group's mineslast year.
