The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang has transported more than 20 tonnes of goods to island communes to serve locals during the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet) – the most important annual holiday.

The goods, worth over 1 billion VND (47,000 USD), were carried to An Son and Lai Son communes in Kien Hai district by the provincial Industry and Trade Department, Border Guard High Command and two local firms.

They reached the localities from January 15-17 and were sold with prices of 5-10 percent lower than that of the market.

Nguyen Thi Xuan Lan, a local in An Son commune, said she bought many kinds of high-quality goods with reasonable prices, such as rice, jam, sugar and milk.

Meanwhile, Pham Thi Lieu, another local, said she and her neighbours are happy as this year the goods are abundant and diverse.

According to Pham Chi Cong, Vice Director of the Co.opmart Kien Giang, this is the second year the firm has shipped goods to the island communes. This year, the amount of goods that the firm has brought is five tonnes higher that last year, with 11 tonnes of rice, he said.

An Son and Lai Son are remote island communes located in the southwestern sea of the country with a total population of 13,000 people.-VNA
