Bangkok (VNA) - The Royal Thai Police (RTP) will deploy over 90,000 officers to ensure the elections slated for May 14 are safe.

RTP spokesman Pol Lt Gen Archayon Kraithong said the force will also open an election safety centre on April 20, adding that the national police chief had appointed deputy national police chief Pol Gen Roy Ingkapairoj as the head of the new centre which will run until May 17.

The centre will educate police who are safeguarding the public and tackling crime during the election. It will also coordinate with other agencies.

According to Pol Lt Gen Archayon, police must remain neutral when acting in an official capacity and focus on safeguarding the public.

The Thai cabinet has approved a budget of 5.95 billion THB (174.5 million USD) to hold the elections./.
