Thailand plans to develop a logistics centre in the northern border province of Loei , which will also connect to China and Vietnam in order to promote cross-border trade with Laos , China and Vietnam , said a Thai commerce official.

According to Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot, a centre to facilitate the transport of goods and warehouses will be set up. The nation also intends to reopen Loei Airport within three months.

The Thai Government will approve an additional budget of 1.7 billion USD to develop logistics and irrigation systems in Loei, said Alongkorn Ponlaboot, adding that once the logistics centre becomes operational, cross-border trade with Laos will grow by 20 percent a year over the next three years.

Trade between the countries reached 2.38 billion USD last year, with Thai exports accounting for 1.77 billion USD.

Meanwhile, statistics from the Thai Ministry of Commerce have revealed that two-way trade between Vietnam and Thailand earned 4.2 billion USD in the first nine months of 2009 with imports accounting for 1 billion USD, which has helped Vietnam become Thailand ’s fourth largest trading partner./.
