Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – Nine Lao citizens who are irregular migrants or have undocumented marriages and currently residing in the border district of A Luoi, Vietnam’s central province of Thua Thien-Hue, took Vietnamese nationality on September 6.

At the event to announce the President’s nationality granting decision, Vice Chairman of the Thua Thien-Hue People’s Committee Phan Thien Dinh said after becoming citizens of Vietnam, they will have their residence registered, personal papers provided and rights and legitimate interests ensured. They will also benefit from support policies to stabilise their lives.

He asked local relevant agencies to enhance the management of border, residence, irregular migration and undocumented marriages across border, while facilitating the registration and management of new Vietnamese nationality holders’ civil status.

It is also necessary to further reinforce the special friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos, including between Thua Thien-Hue and Lao provinces, he added.

According to the provincial Department of Justice, irregular migration and undocumented marriage are years-long issues in the localities sharing the border with Laos, including A Luoi district.

After many years of residing in Vietnam’s territory, most of them have managed to integrate into the local society. However, as they haven’t adopted the Vietnamese nationality, they and their descendants haven’t had full citizenship, which has not only posed numerous difficulties to their lives but also led to complex problems in residence management and border security between the two countries.

Under an agreement on the settlement of irregular migration and undocumented marriages in border areas between the Vietnamese and Lao governments, Thua Thien-Hue and the Lao provinces of Salavan and Sekong have jointly conducted surveys to have consistent statistics about such cases in A Luoi district, the justice department noted.

Vietnam and Laos share a border of 2,337km that runs across 10 Vietnamese provinces and 10 Lao provinces. The 85km-long section in Thua Thien-Hue is in A Luoi district.-VNA
