Thua Thien-Hue province to expand Phu Bai airport

The central province of Thua Thien-Hue plans to expand Phu Bai International Airport in a bid to welcome 3-3.5 million passengers in 2020 and up to 7 million per year in 2025.

Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – The centralprovince of Thua Thien-Hue plans to expand Phu Bai International Airport in abid to welcome 3-3.5 million passengers in 2020 and up to 7 million per year in2025.

The province will expand the airport’sterminal, taxiway, runway and apron at a total investment of 5.56 trillion VND(245 million USD).

The Phu Bai International Airport is located onNational Highway 1A in Huong Thuy town.

The airport has an important role in theeconomic, cultural, social and defence strategy of Thua Thien-Hue and thenorthern central region. The airport is significant in promoting tourism forHue city and the whole central region.

In 2018, the airport and the People’s Committeeof Huong Thuy town have coordinated in marking planting landmarks around theairport, while reviewing the land area for the airport’s expansion.

Initially, the airport will be extended to PhuBai, Thuy Tan and Thuy Phu communes of Huong Thuy town.

The area needing cleared for the project is153.17 hectares, including 24.22 hectares in Phu Bai, 20.79 hectares in ThuyPhu and 108.16 hectares in Thuy Tan. A total of 296 households should beremoved to other resettlement areas.

Currently, the Phu Bai International Airport isable to welcome 1.5 million passengers per year and is often overloaded.

In 2017, the airport served 1.75 millionpassengers, with growth of 15 percent per year in the number of passengers.-VNA
