Tra Vinh attempts to preserve Khmer language

Every summer, it has become customary for most Khmer Theravada Buddhist temples in Trà Vinh to organize Khmer language classes. These classes attract a large number of local Khmer students, offering them not only a chance to preserve their language, but also to engage in meaningful activities during their school break.

This summer, the Camphong Chuk Temple in Ô Trôm Hamlet, Hiếu Tử Commune, Tiểu Cần District, welcomed nearly 70 students. In addition to learning to read and write Khmer language, the students are also introduced to their traditional customs and cultural heritage.

Tra Vinh Province is home to 143 Khmer Theravada Buddhist temples, most of which offer Khmer language classes during the summer, attracting over 20,000 students each year. The classes are entirely free, and the instructors receive specialized training from the provincial Department of Education and Training.

Tra Vinh's Department of Education and Training has also integrated Khmer language instruction into local schools. More than 100 schools across the province offer Khmer language classes, with over 800 classes and 19,000 students participating.

With over 300,000 people, the Khmer population accounts for more than 31.5% of Tra Vinh's total. The province's efforts to teach the Khmer language in schools and temples are helping young Khmer people develop their language skills, and gain a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage./.
