TraVinh (VNA) - A series of policies and measures have been devisedand implemented by authorities of the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh inrecent years to further better the spiritual and material life of the Khmerpeople community .
Tra Vinh is home to nearly 328,000 Khmer people, accounting for 31.5 percent ofthe locality’s population.
Kien Ninh, head of the provincial Committee of Ethnic Affairs, said Tra Vinhhas been allocated nearly 52 billion VND (2.24 million USD) from the central budgetto build 76 infrastructure works in specially disadvantaged communes in line withthe Government’s Programme 135.
Nearly 800 local households were supported in promoting production activities, diversifyinglivelihoods and expanding models for poverty reduction.
The locality is focusing on the disbursement of 9-billion-VND non-refundable assistancesourced from the Irish Government for the building of 10 infrastructureprojects, expected to be completed in 2019.
The Social Policy Bank’s transaction offices in the province disbursed a totalamount of 25 billion VND, helping nearly 800 local households access loans for theirproduction development.
Khmer people in Tra Vinh have also benefited from many other policies,especially those related to legal assistance.
The provincial Party Committee and People’s Committee have also paid attentionto preserving cultural value of Khmer people through organising traditionalfestivals.
By the end of 2018, Tra Vinh has only 16,000 poor household, a year-on-yeardecrease of 2.46 percent. Of which, it recorded a 4.4 percent decline of poorhouseholds in the Khmer people community. -VNA
