Two dead, five missing in landslide in Nghe An

Hanoi (VNA) – A landslide triggered by heavy rain left two people dead and five others missing in Quy Chau district, central Nghe An province, which borders Nhu Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province, on early September 14.

The landslide in Chau Nga commune swept away the tent of 10 people, who picked up bamboo shoots on the mountain, while they were sleeping in. Three of them escaped and reported the incident to the local authorities.

The two districts have deployed forces to search for the missing.

The same day, the Nghe An provincial steering committee on disaster prevention and rescue reported flooding from tropical storm Rai left one dead, one injured and three missing across the locality.

Nguyen Thi Tinh, 47, from hamlet No 2, Nghi My commune, Nghi Loc district, died after being struck by lightning while working in the field.

Floods caused heavy damage to Nghe An’s on agricultural production and infrastructure. According to data from the provincial People’s Committee, as of September 14, 4,835 hectares of rice, 2,683 hectares of corn and vegetables, 401 hectares of industrial crops were damaged by floods.

Floods also killed 4,760 poultry and damaged about 700 houses. Many roads and residential areas were cut off by floods and landslides.

Nghe An province asked its sectors and localities to closely watch the situation, boost communication campaigns and deploy forces to guard at vulnerable spots.

Storm Rai, the fourth so far this year, made landfall in central Vietnam early on September 13, causing downpours in the region.-VNA
