The UN highly values Vietnam ’s success in implementing millenniumdevelopment goals (MDGs) as well as its effective participation in the“One-UN” initiative in the country.
UNDevelopment Programme (UNDP) leader Helen Clark made the praise at ahigh-level meeting on commitment to accelerating the implementation ofMDGs, held in New York on Sept. 21 on the sidelines of the 66 thsession of the UN General Assembly. The event was jointly organised bythe UNDP, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Bank (WB) and theJapanese Government.
Speaking at the meeting,Ambassador Bui The Giang, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnamto the UN, reported that Vietnam has recorded remarkableachievements in implementing the MDGs adopted by the UN Summit in 2000thanks to its high economic growth rate and successful implementation ofsocio-economic policies.
The UN and internationalcommunity have recognised Vietnam as one of the Asia-Pacificcountries successfully implementing MDGs, he noted.
“ Vietnam is now able to say that it has fulfilled five out ofeight MDGs ahead of schedule and is speeding up the implementation ofthe remaining goals in order to fulfil them on schedule in 2015,” Giangstressed.
According to the Vietnamese diplomat,Vietnam has faced numerous challenges during its MDGs implementationas it has to ensure the all-nation implementation of the goals, bringingbenefits to all people strata, overcome difficulties derived from theglobal economic and financial crisis and deal with climate changeconsequences and protectionism.
To surmount thesechallenges, Vietnam will make stronger efforts to better integrateMDGs into the country’s socio-economic development plans, programmes andstrategies in all aspects, he said.
Therefore,the country wishes to receive continued support and assistance from theUN, international organisations and donors to successfully implementMDGs, he added.
Ambassador Giang also affirmedthat in the context of difficulties in realising MDGs in many regionsthroughout the world, Vietnam fully supports the UN’s view to continueconsidering the MDGs implementation one of its highest priorities./.
