A delegation of U.S. Roman Catholic Church leaders on August 18 urged President Barack Obama's administration to lift the 47-year-old economic embargo against the Cuban government.

“The important thing is not to lose the opportunity of increased closeness and understanding between our two governments,” Thomas Wenski, the bishop of Orlando , Florida , was quoted by AFP as saying.

“I believe that the church, here and there, should advocate for this,” said Wenski, speaking in Spanish at a press conference in Havana.

Wenski is part of a delegation of bishops that began a four-day visit to the island on August 17. The delegation includes Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley and the auxiliary bishop of San Antonio, Texas, Oscar Cantu.

O'Malley, who said he has visited Cuba for several times over the past 20 years, said there has been a “notable improvement” of ties between Havana and the church since Pope John Paul II’s visit in January 1998.

The US church has urged an end to the embargo, imposed by Washington in 1962 to weaken the Cuban government.

Cuba’s Catholic churches received more than 850,000 USD in funds from US churches after Hurricanes Gustav, Ike and Paloma struck the island last year, according to the news agency./.
