The US Embassy in Vietnam has donated 20,000 USD to a project to help disadvantaged youth in the central city of Da Nang find employment.

The donation was handed over by the embassy’s Chargé d'Affaires Claire Pierangelo and US Consul General to Ho Chi Minh City Rena Bitter during their October 7 visit to the city’s Centre for Advice and Job Placement Assistance for disadvantaged youth, run by the Vietnamese non-governmental organisation REACH.

The six-month project, which will run from June to December 2014, is aimed at vulnerable young people, especially those affected by domestic violence, human trafficking, poverty and HIV/AIDS.

The US aid will fund training courses in the fields of tourism, hospitality, hairdressing , sales and marketing, and web and graphic design at REACH centres in Hanoi, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An and Hai Duong.

In her speech at the centre, Claire Pierangelo thanked REACH for its efforts to support Vietnamese youth and emphasised the importance of equal opportunities for individuals to gain success in their lives.
REACH’s training programmes help boost students’ employability. The centre has provided training for more than 10,000 disadvantaged youths, with 80 percent finding a job within six months after graduation.

REACH was formerly known as the Livelihood Advancement Business School (LABS), which has been supported by the international organisation PLAN since 2004.-VNA
