Tokyo (VNA) – A Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung attended the 22nd Asia Future Conference in Tokyo, Japan on May 30.

Themed: “Rising to global challenges and realising Asia’s future,” the event attracted 500 scholars, and Japanese and foreign businesses.

In his opening speech, President and CEO of Nikkei Naotoshi Okada said Asia has become an economic driver that accounts for 60 percent of the global growth.

Former Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, described reform and restructuring as key to Asia’s economic growth, and praised free trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) for strengthening synchronism among regional economies.

Goh also underscored the significance of settling disputes by peaceful means in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Speaking at the event, ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh said since its birth in late 2015, the ASEAN Economic Community has actively integrated into the global economy, adding that more measures should be adopted to facilitate the flow of goods and services in the region and the world.

President of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) Hiroyuki Ishige urged the US and Japan to approve the TPP this year because the deal is key to shaping Asia’s future.

On May 30-31, scholars are scheduled to deliver speeches featuring challenges faced by Asia and propose solutions.-VNA
