Vietnam, China sign MoU to boost cooperation in agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) and China’s Ministry of Agriculture on May 20 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further expand cooperation in agriculture.

Activities covered by the MoUinclude research, technology, trade, seedling production, control andprevention of diseases on plants and animals; production of agriculturalmachinery; farm produce processing; exchange of experts andinformation.

Vu Van Tam, Deputy Minister of theMARD, said Vietnam and China have cooperated effectively in theFisheries Agreement in the Gulf of Tonkin and they should enhance jointefforts for sustainable fisheries.

Tam said thatthe two countries can cooperate in the development of new breeds withhigh economic value and create linkages in processing and consumption.

In trade, he proposed boosting the exchange ofinformation on diseases and the fight against the trafficking ofunquarantined animals and animal products.

Thedeputy minister also wanted the two ministries to step up training inresearch, fighting epidemic and producing vaccine as well as theapplication of high technology in agriculture.

Chinese Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Zhang Taolin expressed hisagreement with the MARD’s proposals, particularly those concerningseafood resources.

The two ministries haveconducted a number of cooperation activities in the fields ofagriculture, fisheries and capacity building training, while encouraginginvestment in wood processing, animal feed and cultivation.

In 2014, Chinese businesses invested in 112 projects in agriculturewith a combined capital of 279 million USD. In the first quarter of2015, there are 21 new Chinese projects with a total of 33 million USD,mostly involving in wood processing, animal feed, seafood and vegetablesand fruits.

The agriculture trade between Chinaand Vietnam increased from 3.4 billion USD in 2009 to 8 billion USD in2013, or an annual growth of 23 percent.-VNA

Tenth Vietnam–China border defence friendship exchange to feature innovations

Scheduled for March 18–19 in Quang Ninh province of Vietnam and China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the exchange aims to realise high-level common perceptions between the two Parties and countries on deepening substantive defence cooperation, strengthening friendship and solidarity, and promoting practical collaboration among border protection forces, local authorities and people in border areas, thereby contributing to building a border of peace, friendship, stability, cooperation and development.

Vietnam, Laos strengthen defence cooperation

General Nguyen Tan Cuong proposed both sides continue effectively implementing the agreed cooperation areas, including holding high-level delegation exchanges, maintaining consultation and dialogue mechanisms, and coordinating to successfully organise the annual meeting of the defence ministers of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
