A Vietnamese delegation had working sessions with the European Union’s relevant agencies in Brussels , Belgium , on Oct. 18-19 to exchange views on human rights.
The delegation, led by Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, met with officials of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Delegation for Relations with the Countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and different agencies of the EC’s Directorate General for External Relations.
At the working session, the Vietnamese officials explained Vietnam ’s policies on promoting and ensuring human rights, which are manifested through increasingly improved legal system and mechanism for implementing citizens’ human rights.
The delegates also presented the results Vietnam has gained in promoting and ensuring human rights, particularly the freedom of speech, press, belief and religion, and assembly, as well as social, cultural and economic rights for every people.
The EU officials acknowledged the remarkable changes Vietnam recorded in political, socio-economic, and legal fields, and affirmed their supports to the country’s renovation.
The two sides agreed that increasing dialogues and direct information exchange between EU and Vietnamese agencies will be useful for broadening mutual understanding and boosting the developing multilateral relations between Vietnam and the EU.
Talking with a Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Brussels , Deputy FM Minh appreciated his working session with H. Hautala, Chairwoman of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights on Oct. 19.
He said the session, the first direct one between Vietnamese and EU representatives on human rights, was a chance for the two sides to exchange official information.
He also stressed that the two sides’ dialogues are being carried out in accordance with the recent agreement made by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and EC President M. Barroso on the occasion of the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 8).
The dialogues are also going in line with the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) initialled by the two sides, which calls for increasing exchange, dialogue and cooperation in the human rights fields./.
