Vietnam expected to make more contributions to CICA

Hanoi (VNA) – Ambassador Kairat Sarybay, ExecutiveDirector of the Secretariat of the Conference on Interaction and ConfidenceBuilding Measures in Asia (CICA), on April 8 expressed his hope that with itsincreasing prestige and position, Vietnam will make more contributions to CICA for peace, security and prosperity in the region.

Sarybay noted his wish at a meeting with PresidentNguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoi on April 8, which also saw the attendance of representativesfrom the Embassy of Kazakhstan.

Sarybay, a Kazakh diplomat, said leaders and people ofKazakhstan have admired late President Ho Chi Minh as well as Vietnam’sstruggle for national liberation in the past and its socio-economic reforms.

On this occasion, Sarybay handed over a letter ofKazakh President Kassym Jomart Tokayev to President Phuc, inviting the Vietnameseleader to attend the sixth CICA Summit, slated for October 2022 in Kazakhstan.

At the meeting, President Phuc stressed that peace, securityand development in the region and the world are of significance, and allcountries need to make every effort to contribute to enhancing cooperation ineconomy, trade, investment and the fight against global challenges, especiallyclimate change, diseases, terrorism and cross-border crime.

He also called on CICA to carry forward its operationalprinciples, including those on respecting sovereignty, territorial integrityand equality, respecting each other; not using or threatening to use force;peacefully settling disputes; not intervening into internal affairs; promotingmultilateral cooperation; and observing international law and the UnitedNations Charter.

Since its inception 30 years ago, CICA hasdeveloped strongly, becoming a major forum on enhancing dialogue,consolidating strategic trust, and strengthening collaboration between membercountries for peace, cooperation and prosperity in Asia, the President emphasised.

He suggested CICA support the Association ofSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN)’s and Vietnam’s stance to ensure peace, safetyand freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea and address disputes through peaceful measures in accordance with international law, the 1982 United NationsConvention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the UN Charter.

Vietnam consistently pursues a foreign policy ofindependence, self-reliance, being a responsible member of the internationalcommunity, actively joining CICA activities and working to promote cooperationin economy, trade, agriculture, tourism and environmental protection betweenmember countries, he affirmed.

President Phuc noted his belief that the sixth CICA Summit willbe a success, pledging that the Vietnamese delegation will attend the summitwith the most active and practical contributions.

The President asked Sarybay to convey his greetingsand sentiments to leaders and people of Kazakhstan, and lauded the goodfriendship and cooperation between the two countries, with two-way trade lastyear doubling the figure in 2020.

He also commended Kazakhstan, which is one of the founding members of CICA, for its significant contributions to the forum's development over thepast time./.

Resolution adjusting 2025 socio-economic development plan adopted

Under the resolution, the legislative body decided to adjust some key targets. Accordingly, the gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate is set to reach 8% or higher, with the GDP scale this year expected to exceed 500 billion USD. According to the resolution, the construction of a modern and harmonious railway aims to meet the transport demand between Vietnam and China. The initiative is expected to serve as a catalyst for rapid and sustainable economic development along the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong economic corridor while strengthening national defence and security and promoting the industrialisation and modernisation, contributing to delivering on the targets and missions set at the documents of the 13th National Party Congress and the Party’s resolutions.

NA deputies to approve several resolutions, laws on February 19

The deputies will pass a resolution addressing issues related to the streamlining of the political system’s organisational apparatus, a resolution on supplementation to the 2025 socio-economic development plan with a growth target of at least 8%, and another on pilot policies to remove barriers in science-technology research and innovation activities.
