Havana (VNA) – Vietnam always attaches importance to expand friendship and cooperation with Caribbean countries, including Haiti, Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba and Haiti Nguyen Trung Thanh has said.
Thanh had meetings with Haitian President Jovenel Moise, Prime Minister Jean-Michel Lapin and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bocchit Edmond during his working trip to the Caribbean country from April 20-24. The Vietnamese diplomat and Haitian leaders discussed measures to promote the sound friendship between the two countries in the time ahead.
President Jovenel Moise spoke highly of the bilateral relations in the past time, saying that both nations have shared common values of peace, security and cooperation for development.
He said that apart from telecommunications, Vietnam and Haiti boast huge potential to work together in the fields of agriculture and food security.
Lauding Vietnamese investments in Haiti, he described the joint venture between Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group and Haiti’s Telecom Company as a symbol of economic cooperation between the two countries.
For his part, Ambassador Thanh affirmed that Vietnam is willing to share experience with Haiti in agriculture development, and will serve as a bridge to connect Haiti with other Southeast Asian countries.
At the meetings, both sides expressed their desire to expand bilateral relations in the coming time as well as coordinate at international forums and multilateral organisations like Francophonie and the UN.
Ambassador Thanh wished that Haiti would support Vietnam’s candidacy as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2020-2021 terms.
He affirmed Vietnam commits to promoting dialogues and collaboration for peace and security, preventing conflicts, handling international disputes via peaceful measures, protecting civilians in conflicts and addressing post-war consequences to build a sustainable peace. Besides, Vietnam will work to boost cooperation between the UNSC and regional organisations, contributing to ensuring regional and global peace and security.-VNA
