Vietnam holds huge potential in seaweed farming

Boasting a diverse marine ecosystem, Vietnam has the conditions necessary for seaweed farming to meet domestic demand. However, the industry is yet to be fully tapped.

There are more than 800 seaweed species in Vietnam’s waters, 88 of which are said to hold economic value.

According to insiders, the seaweed farming and processing industry has been formed in several Southeast Asian countries. With quality standards on seaweed products, each kilo sells at higher prices that those from Vietnam.

Vietnam yields an average of 120,000 tons of seaweed per year. In 2019, the country exported 3,000 tons, pocketing 4.5 million USD. With a potentially total area of 900.000 ha, Vietnam has a really good opportunity to develop its seaweed farming in the time ahead./.
