Vietnam hopes ASEAN and China can soon start official negotiations on a Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC), making contribution to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi said while responding to question on Vietnam’s viewpoints over Indonesia’s draft COC at the ministry’s regular press briefing in Hanoi on Oct. 25.

He said ASEAN has been accelerating official consultation between ASEAN and China for the building of a COC.

ASEAN has completed fundamental documents on COC elements which were approved by ASEAN Foreign Ministers in July, he added.

Indonesia has made a draft with more specific and detailed contents of the elements, Nghi said, adding that ASEAN countries will continue to discuss these contents.

At the press briefing, the spokesperson also announced some major external activities in the coming time.

Most remarkably, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will visit Vietnam from November 6-7.

Nghi said this is an important visit in the context that the two countries have lifted their relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership level.

It is expected that the two sides will discuss orientations and measures to further enhance their ties in the coming time as well as international and regional issues of mutual concerns.-VNA
