Vietnam is joining international efforts to protect blue ocean in response to World Ocean Day 2022.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam is joining international efforts to protect blueocean in response to World Ocean Day 2022.

Themed “Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean”,this year’s day highlights the importance of coordination activities betweennations and organisations to revive degrading ocean and marine ecosystems, and preservemarine environment and natural resources for sustainable development goals.

Luu Anh Duc, deputy head of the Department of Science andInternational Cooperation under the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands,said the trend of blue sea economic development in the world helps promotethe common development of countries, including Vietnam.

According to him, the world considers the 21st century that of the ocean with new approaches which emphasise sustainableeconomic development and environmental protection to promote socio-economic growth,while adapting to climate change on a global scale.

Vietnam is one of the 12 biodiversity centres, and one of the 16countries owning the highest biodiversity globally with rare and preciousgenetic resources. However, the nation is facing degradation in biodiversityalong with other great challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, environmentaland water pollution, land degradation, and ocean plastic waste and the extremeeffects of climate change, requiring each individual to be more aware of theimportance of protecting the environment, and ensuring a harmoniousrelationship between man and nature.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Hasaid that with a high determination in action, Vietnam is stepping up economicrestructuring in association with the development of digital economy, blueeconomy and circulation economy to effectively use and preserve naturalresources and protect people’s living environment and health.

In May 2020, the Government issued Decision No. 647/QD-TTgapproving an international cooperation project on sustainable marine economic developmentof Vietnam to 2030. The project affirms that international collaborationon sustainable development of the marine economy must ensure the consistentimplementation of the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace,friendship, cooperation and development, diversification andmultilateralisation; as well as the legitimate rights and interests of theVietnamese nation and people./.

Emission standards for motorcycles to be issued in July

Under the draft, motorcycles produced before 2008 will be subject to the lowest level of inspection standards, level 1, while those manufactured from 2008 onwards will be assessed to a higher standard. Similar rules will also apply to motorised vehicles, with level 1 for those manufactured before 2016.

Vietnam consults stakeholders on climate change scenarios

The 2025 scenarios build on Vietnam’s 2020 projections, incorporating the latest findings from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s sixth assessment report and insights from domestic and global partners. The focus is on extreme weather events, particularly in urban areas, and rising sea levels, which threaten Vietnam’s low-lying coastal regions. The goal is to guide policymaking, urban planning, and local adaptation strategies.

Lang Son becomes Vietnam’s 4th global geopark

Lang Son Global Geopark spans over 4,842 square kilometres, roughly 58% of the province, and is home to around 627,500 people. It features a rich blend of geological wonders and cultural heritage, including stunning caves and sinkholes such as Nguom Mooc Cave, Tham Lum and Ung Roac. Its biodiversity is also protected within the Huu Lien Nature Reserve.

Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.
