Vietnam operates 1,500 kidney transplants

Thua Thien - Hue (VNA) – Vietnamese doctors have successfully performed 1,500 kidney transplants, 50 liver transplants and 13 heart cases to date.

The figures were revealed during a scientific conference on endolaparoscopic surgery which kicked off in the central Hue city on December 17.

The two-day conference brought together about 1,000 leading domestic and foreign scientists, experts and doctors to share experience and technologies in the field of endoscopy and surgery.

About 200 scientific reports would be presented at the conference. Besides, participants would have chances to learn from live performances of organ transplant operated by the leading professors in Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City and Hue .

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien said the surgery sector in Vietnam has achieved a remarkable progress in recent years, now hosting 16 facilities able to transplant kidney, five for liver and three for heart transplant with a staff competent to conduct sophisticated operating techniques.

Modern technologies applied in the field, such as endoscopy through natural holes and robot-assisted surgery, have helped patients not suffer from pains, he added.

Hue Central Hospital ’s doctors succeeded in their first human heart transplant, which was conducted four years and nine months ago. They conducted soundly a transplant of a Heartware partial artificial heart, the first such operation in Vietnam , said the hospital’s director Bui Duc Phu.

The hospital has gained initial success in using stem cell transplantation to treat cancer , he added.

In the conference’s framework, the Ministry of Health presented insignia “For the Health of People” to Francois Lacaine , Vice President of the French Society of Digestive Surgery.

Lacain received the title “Good People, Good Deed” granted by the People’s Committee of the central province of Thua-Thien Hue.-VNA

Brain-dead organ donor helps save six lives

Within 24 hours, the process of receiving the donated liver, two kidneys, two corneas, and skin to conducte transplantation for six patients was completed. The last surgery ended at 8:00 pm on May 3.
