Vietnam will do its utmost to protect the ozone layer, said Deputy General Director of the Hydrometeorology and Climate Change Department Nguyen Khac Hieu on September 11.

While implementing the Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer and responding to International Ozone Layer Protection Day (September 16), Vietnam, along with other notable countries, has tried its best to protect this essential component of the earth’s atmosphere, as well as the earth itself, for future generations.

Together, such countries have, since 1994, strictly implemented the terms of the Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer and contributed to reducing the amount of deleterious substances from 1.5 billion tonnes in 1989 to current 52 million tonnes.

Production industries in Vietnam have so far reduced the emission of substances such as CFC 11 and CFC 12 from 500 tonnes to 75 tonnes.

The Vietnamese government has prohibited the import of cooling and refrigeration equipment using CFCs, and promulgated an inter-ministerial circular that details regulations on the management of the import and export of such substances./.
